Forza Horizon 6 on Steam Deck — Best Settings

Forza Horizon 6 runs on Steam Deck, but you'll need to tweak settings to get a smooth experience without killing your battery. This guide covers the best settings for 30 FPS (stable), 40 FPS (smooth), and 60 FPS (sacrifice visuals).

Quick Recommendation Summary

GoalPresetResolutionFPSTDPBattery Life
Best Balance (Recommended)Medium800p30 (stable)10W~2.5 hours
SmootherLow-Medium800p4012W~2 hours
Max BatteryLow720p308W~3+ hours
Visual QualityHigh800p3015W~1.5 hours

Recommended Settings (Balanced — 30 FPS)

These settings target a stable 30 FPS with good visual quality and ~2.5 hours of battery life:

In-Game Graphics Settings:

SettingValue
PresetMedium (customize below)
Resolution1280 × 800
Scaling ModeAMD FSR 2.0
Scaling QualityBalanced
Anti-AliasingFXAA
Shadow QualityMedium
Texture QualityHigh
World Car DetailMedium
Environment QualityMedium
ReflectionsLow
Ray TracingOff
Motion BlurOff (personal preference)
V-SyncOff
FullscreenBorderless

Steam Deck Quick Access Menu (… button):

SettingValue
Framerate Limit30
TDP Limit10W (on)
Manual GPU ClockOn — 1000 MHz
Half Rate ShadingOff

Settings for 40 FPS (Smoother Gameplay)

If you have a Steam Deck OLED or prefer smoother motion:

Adjust from Balanced preset:

SettingChange
Scaling QualityPerformance (from Balanced)
Shadow QualityLow (from Medium)
World Car DetailLow (from Medium)
TDP Limit12W
Framerate Limit40

This will give you ~2 hours of playtime. The 40 FPS cap on the Steam Deck OLED's 90Hz screen looks significantly smoother than 30 FPS without the battery hit of 60 FPS.

Steam Deck-Specific Tweaks

Proton Version:

  • Use Proton Experimental or GE-Proton for best compatibility
  • The game is verified for Steam Deck, but GE-Proton often has better shader compilation

Shader Cache:

  • Allow the game to fully compile shaders before playing (wait for "Compiling Shaders" to reach 100%)
  • Expect some stutter in the first 15-20 minutes of a new area while the cache builds

Installation:

  • Install to the internal SSD (not SD card) for significantly faster loading
  • The game requires ~130 GB — make sure you have space
  • If space is tight, uninstall the 4K texture pack in Properties → DLC

Controls:

  • The game fully supports Steam Deck controls out of the box
  • Consider binding the back paddles to:
    • L4: Downshift
    • R4: Upshift
    • L5: Handbrake
    • R5: Look Behind

Known Steam Deck Issues

IssueWorkaround
Shader stutter on new areasNormal — improves after 15-20 min of play
FSR 2.0 ghostingSwitch to TAA if ghosting bothers you, but expect lower FPS
Cloud saves sync slowForce sync before launching: Properties → Installed Files
HDR on Deck OLEDWorks natively, no special config needed
Occasional crash on suspend/resumeSave manually before suspending

The Steam Deck version has been verified by Valve and Playground Games, but heavy traffic areas (Tokyo at night with many AI cars) will occasionally dip below 30 FPS even on the Balanced preset. If this bothers you, drop World Car Detail to Low.
